The 3rd Baltic Conference on Electrochemistry was held between 23rd and 26th of April 2003 in the Orle Hotel. This was also a conference of the Electrochemical Section of the Polish Chemical Society. The event was sponsored by:
International Society of Electrochemistry,
European Federation of Corrosion,
European Section of Electrochemical Society.
138 persons took part in the Conference, mainly from the countries of the Baltic Sea region - Russia, Lithuania, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany and Poland. There were also participants from Ukraine, Hungary, France, Great Britain and the United States of America. 8 main lectures and 44 conference lectures were delivered. 109 posters were presented. It should be emphasised that young scientists and Ph.D. students constituted a significant group among participants having an opportunity to present the results of their research.
The Conference was opened by Prof. Kazimierz Darowicki who welcomed the participants wishing them fruitful meeting, inspiring discussions and nice stay in Gdańsk.
On the first conference session under the chairmanship of Prof. B. Grafov three lectures were presented:
E. Kalman,
New potential inhibitors for copper corrosion
A. M. Kuznetsov,
Theory of electron transfer in tunnel electrochemical contacts
F. Scholz,
Three-phase electrodes.
These lectures, so much different in the problems discussed, had one common feature - they were very interesting and perfectly delivered. Five other main lectures presented at the Conference were also warmly welcomed:
W. Plieth,
Trends and developments in electrochemical deposition technology
O. A. Petrii,
Novel trends in the search of advanced hydride-forming electrode materials
B. M. Grafov,
General approaches to electrochemical noise description
E. Juzeliunas,
Remote corrosion sensing by SQUID magnetometry
P. J. Kulesza,
Applications of conducting polymer based composite film to charge storage and corrosion protection
Besides the participants had an opportunity to listen to 44 section lectures.
All the lectures were followed by deep discussions. High scientific level of the presentations was stressed during many lobby meetings.
The programme of the Conference included also a poster session. The majority of posters were devoted to electrode surface modifications by various types of polymer and composite materials. Significant number of presentations was related to novel investigation techniques. An atmosphere of scientific dispute was also a part of the poster session.
These were not only the lectures and poster presentations that made the Conference a successful meeting. There was also an opportunity to take part in social events and sightseeing trips. Traditionally the first day of the Conference was ended with a banquet.
The participants were very satisfied with the competence and professionalism of hotel personnel. On the second day of the Conference the lectures were followed by sightseeing of Gdańsk Old Town and the castle in Malbork. In the evening during solemn dinner the participants familiarised with the folklore and culture of Kaszuby - beautiful and unique region of Poland.
During the Conference closing Prof. Kazimierz Darowicki made a short summary of the event. Speaking in the name of the participants Prof. Waldfried Plieth expressed gratitude to the organisers for their effort yielding perfectly organised meeting. Many words of thankfulness were directed to the Organising Committee - employees of the Department of Electrochemistry, Corrosion and Materials Engineering. High scientific level of the presentations was also appreciated. Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Solid State Electrochemistry stepped out with an idea of a special issue of the periodical entirely devoted to the 3rd Baltic Conference on Electrochemistry. During plenary discussion it was decided that the next 4th Baltic Conference on Electrochemistry will be organised in 2005 in Greifswald, Germany by Prof. Fritz Scholz.
